Details

Villa Gaviota Cabo San Antonio is located in the beautiful beach Las Tumbas, Guanahacabibes Peninsula, municipality of Sandino, in Pinar del Río province. During the year 1987, the United Nations for Education, Science and Culture (UNESCO) conferred to Guanahacabibes Peninsula the category of Reserve of the Biosphere. On December 14, 2001 the National Park category was also approved for the total extension of 39 830 ha in Guanahacabibes, 23 880 ha are in land and the rest 15 950 ha constitute the marine area. This marine zone is situated at South in the Reserve, from Jaimanitas (East of Cabo Corrientes) to Cabo San Antonio. While the terrestrial part is divided on 3 main areas: Cabo Corrientes, El Viral and Cabo San Antonio. It has also a narrow border of coastal line.

Of the quite abundant archaeological deposits founded in the National Park territory special interest has the residual history of the colonial epoch, located mostly around the Roncali´s light house near from Las Tumbas beach; there are places like Cueva del Francés, a cave with aboriginal wall paintings and others like Musulmanes and Caleta del Resguardo caves with similar characteristics including ceramic findings.

It is widely known that during the colonial times there was a short population in the area that is why it was an ideal place for pirates, corsairs and buccaneers; to our days we are hearing legends of hidden treasures in Guanahacabibes caves and forests linked to sinister murders. Las Tumbas name itself, one of its versions, points to the existence of tombs of victims of internal fights for the treasures possession. Another version indicates that Las Tumbas are spaces among the vegetation, cleaned out with the objective of crop growing, cattle rising and house building.
