Sabanalamar, a natural forest area of 5 600 hectares, located 5 km from the town of Sábalo in the Guane municipality, limits to the north with the Cordillera de los Órganos, to the south with Bailén Beach, to the east with the municipality of San Juan and Martínez and to the west with the Cuyaguateje river. Access to the area is through the Central Highway 50 km from the City of Pinar del Río.

This center was founded more than two decades ago and currently has 719 specimens of different ages and sizes, distributed in lakes and cubicles in which the smallest representatives of the cocodrylus acutus (American crocodile, proboscis crocodile or Tumbes crocodile) are protected. ).

In this hatchery, 1,300 specimens of the American crocodile live.

Every year, specialists release 16 percent of these animals to the natural environment, after reaching the adult phase in captivity with the ideal conditions for their development, away from predators.

Nearby water mirrors host the American crocodile, which is usually very vulnerable in the early stages of its life, in contrast to the strength that characterizes them once grown.

Pinar del Río with two Biosphere Reserves is the province of the country that has the largest number of Protected Areas, which occupy 22 percent of its surface.
